Discussion: Reading Slumps | They Suck!

That dreaded word... SLUMP. It sucks but it happens.

It is the end of the year... most readers are cracking down to get in as many reads as they can before the new year is here. A new year means many, many new releases that we all want to read and enjoy. Is there anything better to a reader than a new book releasing by one of our favorite authors?! The excitement is enough!

But this December has been very different for me. It is the 10th of the month already and I have yet to finish one book! That is such a weird feeling for me. It has been nearly a month since I have finished a book. This is the biggest slump I have had all year. It's not that I haven't tried to read, oh, I have. But both books just didn't hold my attention and I got bored with them. I decided to take a few days off and just worked and watched TV with my husband, we binged some Christmas movies on Netflix. I started a book at the beginning of the week that held my attention and it is part of a series that since book one has held my attention and love. But then adulting got in the way. Work, the business, life and the Spirit of Christmas. I have done so much Christmas stuff the last few days. I really want to get the rest of my shopping done this week!

It is not uncommon for a reader to fall into a slump. It can happen for many different reasons. An amazing book you finished and can't get out of your head, books that don't hold your attention you just end up giving up on and try to move on to the next (me!), and then there are times where there are just so many books that you want to read or series that you want to get caught up on because they are releasing new books in the upcoming new year that it just deterred you (also me!)

Ways to fight a reading slump? I really can't say because honestly, every reader is different, so every reader fights it in their own way. Don't read for a few days, let it pass naturally. Maybe you need to binge watch one of your favorite shows. Take a couple days and just chill, no pressures of starting and finishing a new book. That's what I think is some of the major problems reviewers have and I have mentioned this before. There are reviewers who pressure themselves so bad to read so many books in the year that it pushes them into slumps without them even realizing it's even happening. STOP! Read what you can in the normal pace, why rush it and miss out on a book that could have been more amazing if you took your time with it.

Being in a reading slump sucks! I am reading and I am off work for the next couple days so I plan on finishing the book I have started. I am interested to see where it is going to go but lets hope this slump is over and I can move on, starting the new year right!
