Discussion | Discovering New Genres

For the last three and a half years I have been reading mostly romance, all different genres of romance, from smut to contemporary. A little book called Fifty Shades of Grey caught my eye. I stumbled across the trilogy online, had never heard anyone talk about it. I started reading the first book not even really knowing much about it because that's just what I do, I don't read synopses, I feel most of the time, when I do read the backs of books, it gives too much away.

By the time I finished the third book, it was so huge and the interwebs were going crazy over the powerful, demanding, sexy Mr. Grey! It became so big that ladies who had read the trilogy was out on Amazon looking for books similar to the extremely popular Fifty Shades books. Then Gideon Cross appeared on the scene and he was thrown up there with Grey.

I first read Fifty Shades in May. of 2013. Since then I have been into that genre. Romance, smut, contemporary. I love it. At the beginning of this year, it started falling flat for me. As much as I love the genre, always will, I needed a change and I knew it.

When I was in high school, I use to read and love the Stephanie Plum novels. I think I got up to book thirteen or fourteen before the series fell off my radar. I have recently found my renewed love for the genre. Mystery/Thriller's, even though the Stephanie Plum novels are more comedy/mystery, I was still once into mystery's. Now, Gone Girl has nothing to do with this renewed love because sadly, I have not read Gone Girl nor even The Girl on the Train.

Earlier this year I received an early copy from the publishers of The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena. This novel sparked my love again. Even though there were things in this book I think could have used some improvement, I found myself not wanting to stop reading. I enjoyed the mystery, not knowing what was going to happen, second guessing the main characters, not completely trusting what was being said. It opened the door to this genre again for me. Now, whenever I go into the bookstore, or look for something new on my Kindle, I find myself searching for great mystery/thrillers.

I still read romance, I will never stop reading new romances, but it is nice to take a break from it and lose my mind in a great mystery.
