Discussion: Getting caught up in the hype of it all.
Publishers! Hype! How they get in your head!
So, this is a topic that has been on my mind for a long time now.
I think it is safe to say it is something that bugs me. Now, I love reviewing books! I work with publishing houses and self-publishing authors and also have been added to the auto-approval list on quite a few now. But the publishers know exactly how to hype up their books and get into your brain! They know what they're doing and that's what they are hired for. They are good!
Example:
I like to check in on BookTube to watch reviews as well as read reviews but.... all you find on BookTube is all these video reviewers talking about Young Adult novels.
Now, it's not that I don't like Young Adult but it's really not my area as being I am in my upper 20's and like more content to my reading. Even still, I go on and I watch these video reviews and for the last year now I have realized that they all read the same books at the same time, post their reviews at the same time and when I go to watch video reviews, it's all I see. The same girls and guys reading the same books.
I don't want anyone to take it the wrong way, but how do they all read the same thing and not let the others corrupt or sway their own thoughts and feels? After a while doesn't all their reviews start to sound like they run together?
I do have to say that sometimes I can get swept up in the hype... But there are so many books I can name that I have not read that others have. I have not read the latest book in the Crossfire Series... yet! But when I tell my reader friends, they look at me like I'm crazy. But I do read reviews and I do not want to spoil myself. I like to go into a book with a clear head and come out the other end with my own opinion.
And that's what I think is the maker of an excellent reviewer.
Conclusion:
To wrap this up I think most of it is the hype and how us readers can get caught up in the hype of it all. But once in a while, you have to take a step back and give yourself a break. Go crazy, think outside the box, read something that no one else is reading.
